Your next great cup of coffee has arrived. This year’s
Madres y Maestras limited release is a fruity and floral dark roast with
incredible complexity. This single origin coffee comes courtesy of a small (but
growing larger every year) co-operative of women farmers in the highlands of
Colombia. These ‘Maestras’ have mastered (hey, that’s just like the name!)
every step of coffee farming, from planting to processing. They pick the fruit
at just the right time, ferment the seeds, and let them sun-dry in their yards,
checking for readiness by hand. 

Many of these women were top of their class at the
Women’s Center for Entrepreneurship, a business training program co-founded by
Peet’s in Huila, Colombia. Some are members of Mujeres to Market, a microloan
program sponsored by Tribecoffe’s which helps them expand their farms’ outputs
to span the seasons. Others are sharing their learnings and training the next
generation to invest in their own farms and families’ futures. Their impact on
their community is as important as their expertise is on these microlots. 

Producing between 3 and 7 bags of beans on each of their
farms, this coffee is personal for them. And though the farms are all small,
the terroirs vary greatly, bringing distinct tasting notes to the final batch.
Indulgent notes of chocolate-covered strawberry meet creamy and sweet dulce de
leche, with the floral tartness of rosehip. It’s exceptionally high in quality
and complexity—a coffee our roastmaster calls a “wonderful selection” from
“arguably the best producers in the area.”
